This lovely quality alabaster figure is of a young woman with beautifully sculpted hair, features and clothing folds. The head appears to have been carved separately from the body and there is a joint around the neckline of the dress, although there is no movement between the pieces. She has an Art Nouveau style about her and is wearing a headband with a central flower and a dress folding down to square off the neckline. This unsigned piece is very heavy and displays skilled artistry, now having the character of age from some wear and discolouration which may indicate that she has been outside or perhaps in a summerhouse with surrounding plants.
Dating to circa 1900, this is made of alabaster and marble, and originates from France.
In characterful condition with some ageing, there is a chip to the nose and some minor chips and stress marks visible, along with some yellow discolouration to the face and ingrained dirt, particularly to the joint, all of which suggest that she may have been standing outside at some point. However, this gives character to the piece and does not detract from her general desirability or quality.
