Edwardian Surgical Set. A fine surgical set in original bespoke mahogany case. This particular set belonged to Dr R H Meikle and a cartouche can be found on the top of the case inscribed ‘ Presented to Dr R H Meikle by his many friends as a token of esteem on his leaving Witton Park, August 1901 ‘. DR Meikle was a surgeon based in Ashington Hospital, Darlington and in 1901 it is reported that he took the position of Ships Doctor and Surgeon on HMS Bulwark. The set was made by Brady & Martin ( Newcastle-upon-Tyne ) and comprises the typical surgical items including, surgical knives, snips, hooks, scalpels, bone wax, tourniquet and polished steel saw .
