This beautiful little brooch is set with garnets, pearls and a peridot. The design of this piece is styled from the Arts & Crafts movement, whose artists had a close relationship with the suffragettes. Most suffragette jewellery features the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) colours: purple, white and green.
This piece is in the form of a circle with delicate bands forming a square supporting the centre. The square has deep purple/red garnets attached at each point while the circle is delicately decorated with pearls. The centre of the piece is set off with a stunning large peridot. The gold is marked 9ct. This is a very pretty piece of history and was ahead of its time as the suffragettes, in particular, successfully embraced the language of contemporary fashion – including its emphasis on delicate femininity – as a strategy for increasing the popular appeal of their movement and dodging the stereotype of the ‘masculine’ women’s rights campaigner. Circa 1905.
