A lovely old Georgian silver loving cup from 1768. This piece has a great look about it. A loving cup is a shared drinking container traditionally used at weddings and banquets. It usually has two handles and is often made of silver. Loving cups are often given as trophies to winners of games or other competitions. This one has a lovely baluster body with scrolled handles and extra silver work where the drinker’s thumbs are placed (as the drinker takes hold of both handles when drinking). The centre of the cup is banded tapering down into a reasonably sized foot. There is a cartouche on the front with the initials JR inscribed and surrounded by the classic Georgian swags and bows.Hallmarked for London 1768. This cup does have some wear commensurate with age which results in a great looking antique piece of silver.
