An absolutely stunning hand painted Palekh type box. A Palekh miniature is a Russian folk handicraft tradition of miniature painting, which is done with tempera paints on varnished objects made of papier-mache and taking its name from the village where the tradition began.
The Palekh miniatures usually depict characters and scenes from real life, literary works and fairy tales. Palekh boxes are painted with bright paints over the black background and are known for their elongated, graceful figures, elaborate gold and/or silver ornamentation which is applied in fine lines throughout the painting.
Palekh lacquer boxes are usually signed with the village name where it was made and the name of the artist. These exquisite, highly detailed miniatures painted in Palekh are called “small miracles” and they are in great demand with collectors throughout the world.
This box is decorated with the fable of Vasilisa the Beautiful, taming the Firebird as one of her many tasks. The box is bordered with intricate golden scroll work which works brilliantly to show off the intense red of the fire bird and exquisite detail of Vasilisa herself. The interior is in a crimson lacquer. The condition of the box is near perfect with a small amount of wear to one of the corners. This really is a lovely thing.
