A rare piece, this Anglo-Flemish oak coffer dates back to around 1500 and has fittings suggesting that it would have been carried between two people on a pole, perhaps holding precious metals or some other heavy commodity. A large hole has been made in the front where the lock would have been, presumably to open it. It will make a great statement piece as a decorative talking point.
– Front of top lifts to open, rather than the whole dome.
– Metal bindings and attachments, some showing a lighter colour suggesting steel.
– Circular holes and large eyelets fixed at both ends.
In sturdy condition showing wear consistent with age and use. There is a large hole in the front, where the lock would once have been.
