An evocative piece of English history, this 17th century coffer is made of a wood which we believe to be chestnut and is of a size and shape consistent with having been a container for rapiers. A true antique at around 350 years old, it continues to make a functional storage container and will look fabulous in a country home.
– Attractively carved front panel with a 5 petalled English rose at the centre of the designs on either side.
– Planked construction with lovely shaped ends to form the feet.
– Iron hinges and lock.
– At some point, modern webbing straps have been attached to the inside to hold the lid open, but only the ends of these remain.
In functional condition showing wear consistent with age and use. As to be expected for a piece of this age, there are signs of old woodworm which has caused some minor damage, with small holes in the top near the hinges, some areas of the feet worn away and some internal wear, but the piece is sturdy and generally solid for use. A key is available to fit the lock, but the lock does not work.
