A gloriously scented camphorwood box, this was originally sold out of Hong Kong, but has been decorated with roundels on the top and the front to suggest use in Egypt as a military chest by a member of the East Lancashire regiment.
– Heavily carved with oriental themes, including people and junks on a river with buildings and trees in the background.
– Light coloured carved wooden roundels inset to the top and front show “Egypt, East Lancashire”, with a sphinx and a crown at the top.
– Carved block feet.
– Brass lock and hinges, with brass reinforced inside corners.
– Stamped inside “Hung Hop, No. 5 Shing Wong St., Hong Kong”.
– Wooden lifting handles at the sides.
– The back is plain.
– Lovely smell of the camphorwood inside.
In good condition showing wear consistent with age and use. The block feet are not firmly fixed, but a little loose and can be swivelled around. There is no locking pin.
