An important early 19th-century Anglo-Indian padouk wood centre table.
The substantial top has a carved shallow-relief border of scrolling leaves, berries and birds. The superbly ornate frieze continues with pierced leaves and fruit detailing. The wonderful base features a carved pineapple to the centre, flanked at each corner by carved mythical dragons, fruit and berries, alongside delicately carved floral supports and scrolling feet.
It would look stunning as a focal point in a large room or reception hall.
There is a tilt-top mechanism in place but it does not fix in the upright position. The top is removable to assist in transportation and retains its original brass bolts and sprung catch.
In good condition, showing wear consistent with age and use. There are a small number of very minor chips to the carving, which are unobtrusive and do not detract from this beautiful piece.
