A splendid little box settle, this has some wonderful carving and has a good English heritage, originating from a stately home near the town of Battle in Sussex. It will make a lovely piece of hall furniture, with a seat for putting on shoes and a storage box beneath for the dog’s lead and an umbrella.
– Carved initials at the centre of the back, possibly “CG”.
– Clean shields carved with leaves on each side of the back.
– Carved flower border across the top.
– Stylised carved urns with leaves and bird heads on the box front.
– Arms carved on both sides.
In sturdy condition showing wear consistent with age and use. There is a lock present which is slightly loose, together with a key which does not work.
